Reykjavík food tour questions & answers

Cancellations, weather, allergies and everything else people ask us before a tour.

Booking & cancellations3

How do I cancel or change my booking?

To cancel, use the link in your confirmation email or email us at info@reykjaviklocals.com with your booking reference. To move to another date, email us. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the start time (Iceland time), you get a full refund. If you ask to move at least 24 hours before, we move you for free, subject to availability. Within 24 hours of the start, we cannot refund or move the booking. If you booked through another company such as Viator or GetYourGuide, please cancel through them, because their policy applies.

What happens if not enough people book?

Each departure needs at least 6 guests. If the minimum is not reached, we will tell you no later than 12 hours before the start, and you can choose a full refund or another date.

What if I'm not happy with something?

Please tell your guide straight away so we can try to fix it, or email info@reykjaviklocals.com after the tour. We reply within 14 days. If we cannot agree, you can contact the Icelandic consumer dispute committee, Kærunefnd vöru- og þjónustukaupa (see section 19 of our Terms & Conditions).

On the day6

What happens if the weather is bad?

Our tours go ahead in most weather, so please dress warmly with waterproof layers and shoes with good grip. If a storm warning or conditions make the tour unsafe, we will cancel and you can choose a full refund or a new date. Cancelling yourself within 24 hours because of ordinary rain or cold is not refundable.

I'm running late. What should I do?

Call or message us at +354 659 1971 right away. We wait up to [10] minutes after the start time, then leave, but we will try to tell you where you can catch up with the group. If you cannot join, the booking counts as a no-show and is not refunded.

Can I bring my children?

Children are welcome on the food tour and the Reykjavík Walking Tour with a paying adult who looks after them. There are no child prices: every guest pays the full price. The food tour is about 3 hours on foot and the walking tour about 2 hours, so think about whether that suits younger children. The pub crawl is for guests aged 20 and over only.

How much walking is involved? Is the tour accessible?

The food tour is about 3 to 4 km over roughly 3 hours, and the Reykjavík Walking Tour about 2 to 3 km over roughly 2 hours, both at an easy pace, with some slopes, steps and possibly icy pavements in winter. Some venues have steps or narrow doors. If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, contact us before booking and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Will you take photos of me?

Our guides sometimes take photos or short videos, for example a group photo we send you afterwards. Just tell the guide at the start if you would rather not appear in them. We will ask you before using a photo in our marketing where you are the main subject.

Do I need to tip?

No. Tips are never included and never expected. If you enjoyed the tour and want to tip your guide, that is entirely your choice.

Food & drink1

Is alcohol included, and what is the age limit?

The legal drinking age in Iceland is 20. On our guided tours we offer a non-alcoholic option whenever alcohol is served, for guests under 20 and anyone who prefers not to drink. The pub crawl is for guests aged 20 and over only, and you must bring valid photo ID. Without it you cannot join and the booking is not refunded.

Local Walk1

How does Local Walk work?

Local Walk is our self-guided walking web app. Food Tour and Private Food Tour guests get access as part of their booking (the Reykjavík Walking Tour and the pub crawl do not include it), and you can also buy a 24-hour, 72-hour or 7-day pass. The time starts when you first activate it. Access is personal, so please do not share it. Information and offers from shops and restaurants in Local Walk can change, and the businesses decide whether they still apply.

More1

I have a food allergy or a special diet. What then?

Vegetarian, or avoiding gluten or lactose? Tell us when you book, or at least 48 hours before the tour, and we’ll check alternatives with the venues. Two of the traditional Icelandic tastings can’t be swapped for an alternative, but everything else can. If you’re vegan or have a severe allergy, please contact us before booking. The food is made in independent kitchens, so we cannot guarantee that anything is completely allergen-free. If you have a severe allergy, bring your medication.
