Terms & Conditions

The rules for booking and joining our tours, in plain English.

Draft. These terms are a draft awaiting legal review. Bracketed items will be filled in before launch.

Last updated: [DAGSETNING]

These terms apply when you book a food tour (public or private), the Reykjavík Walking Tour, the self-guided pub crawl or a Local Walk pass with Reykjavík Locals. Please read them before you book. Making a booking means you accept them, for yourself and for everyone in your booking.

1. Who we are

"Reykjavík Locals", "RL", "we" and "us" mean Local Travels ehf., company ID (kennitala) 551026-1750, registered at Urðarbrunnur 32, 113 Reykjavík, Iceland. VAT number: 163206. We hold a licence from the Icelandic Tourist Board (Ferðamálastofa) as a day tour provider (ferðasali dagsferða), licence number 2026-109. The Icelandic Tourist Board is the licensing and supervising authority.

Contact: info@reykjaviklocals.com · +354 659 1971

"You" means the person making the booking and every guest included in it. The person who books is responsible for passing these terms on to everyone in their group.

2. Our products

  • Food tours: the Reykjavík Locals Food Tour, a small-group guided walking tour in central Reykjavík with several tasting stops, about 3 hours, maximum 14 guests. Includes access to Local Walk.
  • Private food tours: the same food tour for your own group, on a date and terms agreed with you (see section 4). Includes access to Local Walk.
  • Reykjavík Walking Tour: a small-group guided walk through central Reykjavík, about 2 hours, maximum 14 guests. No food is included, and it does not include access to Local Walk.
  • Pub crawl: a self-guided evening route through bars in central Reykjavík, using our web app. There is no guide. Guests must be 20 or older (see section 9).
  • Local Walk: our self-guided walking web app. Food Tour and Private Food Tour guests receive access as part of their booking, and passes can also be bought separately for 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days (see section 15).

Tour descriptions on our website explain what is included, the meeting point, the start time and the approximate duration. Exact stops, menus and routes may vary from day to day (see section 5).

Our tours last less than 24 hours and do not include overnight accommodation, so they are not package travel under the Icelandic Package Travel Act (Act No. 95/2018). [TIL STAÐFESTINGAR HJÁ LÖGFRÆÐINGI]

3. Booking and payment

  • A booking on our website is confirmed when you have paid in full and received a confirmation email from us. If you do not receive a confirmation within a few hours, please check your spam folder and then contact us.
  • Prices are shown in Icelandic krónur (ISK) and include VAT where applicable. Your card may show the amount in another currency, and your card issuer may charge exchange fees that we do not control.
  • Card payments are handled by our payment provider, [GREIÐSLUGÁTT]. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Please check the date, time, product and number of guests in your confirmation straight away and tell us about any mistake.
  • Bring your confirmation (on your phone is fine) to the meeting point.
  • Gratuities are never included and never expected. If you would like to tip your guide, that is entirely up to you.

4. Cancelling or changing your booking

This section applies to bookings made directly on our website. If you booked through another company, see section 16.

Food tours, the Reykjavík Walking Tour and the pub crawl

  • At least 24 hours before the start time (Iceland time): cancel for a full refund, or move your booking to another date free of charge (subject to availability).
  • Less than 24 hours before the start time: no refund, and the booking cannot be moved. We have usually ordered food and held places for you that we cannot resell at short notice.
  • No-show: if you do not come, or arrive too late to join (see section 6), the booking is treated as used and is not refunded.
  • To cancel, use the link in your confirmation email or email us at info@reykjaviklocals.com with your booking reference. To move your booking to another date, email us. The time your cancellation or email reaches us counts.
  • Refunds go back to the card you paid with, normally within [5–10] business days of our approval. How quickly the money appears depends on your bank.
  • Reducing the number of guests follows the same rules for each guest removed.
  • If you cannot come within the 24-hour window because of illness, travel delays or similar, we cannot refund you or move your booking. If you ask, we may be able to offer you a place on another tour if one is free, but this is not guaranteed. Travel insurance may cover your loss.

Your legal right of withdrawal. Under Icelandic consumer law (Act No. 16/2016 on consumer contracts, art. 18), the usual 14-day right of withdrawal for online purchases does not apply to leisure services that are to be provided on a specific date. Our food tours, the Reykjavík Walking Tour and the pub crawl are such services, so the cancellation rules above apply instead. For Local Walk passes, see section 15.

Private and group bookings may be agreed on different terms. If so, those terms will be stated in your confirmation.

5. Changes made by us

We may need to make small changes to a tour, for example replacing a tasting stop, changing the order of stops, adjusting the route or changing the guide. When that happens we will offer a comparable experience. A change of this kind does not give a right to a refund. If we need to make a significant change to the start time, date or content before the tour, we will tell you as soon as we can and you may choose between accepting the change, moving to another date or a full refund.

6. Meeting point and late arrival

  • Please arrive at the meeting point stated in your confirmation at least 10 minutes before the start time.
  • We wait up to [10] minutes after the start time, then leave. This is out of respect for the other guests and the venues expecting us.
  • If you are running late, call or message us at +354 659 1971 straight away. We will try to tell you where to catch up with the group, but we cannot promise that this will be possible, and missed tastings are not refunded.
  • If you arrive too late to join, this counts as a no-show (section 4).

7. Cancellation by us

Weather and safety. Our tours run in most Icelandic weather, so please dress for the forecast. We may cancel or shorten a tour if a storm warning, official advice or conditions on the day make it unsafe or unreasonable to go ahead. Our decision on safety is final.

Minimum numbers. Each departure needs at least 6 guests. If that minimum is not reached, we may cancel the departure and will tell you no later than 12 hours before the start time.

Other reasons. We may also have to cancel because of illness of the guide, closure of venues or other circumstances outside our control.

What you get. If we cancel before the tour starts, you choose between a full refund and moving to another date at no extra cost. If we have to cut a tour short for safety reasons after it has started, we will offer a partial refund or a free place on another date, in proportion to what you missed. We are not responsible for other costs you may have had, such as taxis or other plans, unless the cancellation was caused by our negligence.

8. Food, allergies and dietary needs

  • Tell us about any allergies, intolerances or dietary needs (for example vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free or pregnancy) when you book, or at the latest 48 hours before the tour. We will pass the relevant information on to the venues and try to arrange suitable alternatives. Two of the traditional Icelandic tastings can’t be swapped for an alternative, but everything else can.
  • Some traditional Icelandic dishes cannot be replaced. If you are vegan or have several allergies, please contact us before you book so we can tell you what we can offer on your date. We cannot promise vegan alternatives at every stop.
  • The tasting stops are independent restaurants and food businesses that prepare the food in their own kitchens. Even when an alternative is prepared for you, we and the venues cannot guarantee that any dish is completely free of allergens or traces of them.
  • If you have a severe or life-threatening allergy, please talk to us before booking, check each dish with the guide and the venue, and always carry any medication you need (for example an adrenaline auto-injector). You decide what you eat. Please do not taste anything you are unsure about.
  • If we cannot reasonably meet a need that you told us about in good time, and you decide not to take part for that reason, we will give you a full refund.

9. Alcohol and age

  • The legal age for buying or being served alcohol in Iceland is 20. Guests under 20 are never served alcohol on our tours. On our guided tours we offer a non-alcoholic option whenever alcohol is served, for guests under 20 and anyone who prefers not to drink. No price reduction is given for not drinking.
  • Pub crawl: all guests must be 20 or older and bring valid photo ID (passport, national ID card or driving licence). The bars may check ID at any time. Anyone who cannot show valid ID proving they are 20 or older cannot take part, and no refund is given.
  • Our guides (on guided tours) and the venues may refuse to serve alcohol to anyone who appears intoxicated, and a guest who is clearly drunk may be asked not to continue (see section 10).
  • Please drink responsibly. You are responsible for your own drinking and for getting home safely.

10. Behaviour and removal from a tour

We want every guest to have a good time. Our guide may ask a guest to leave the tour, without a refund, if the guest:

  • is aggressive, abusive, harassing, discriminatory or threatening towards the guide, other guests, venue staff or the public;
  • is so intoxicated, or behaves in a way, that puts themselves or others at risk or seriously disturbs the tour;
  • repeatedly ignores reasonable safety instructions; or
  • breaks the law or the house rules of a venue.

You are responsible for any damage you intentionally or negligently cause to venues or other people's property.

11. Children

  • Children are welcome on food tours and the Reykjavík Walking Tour when accompanied by a paying adult who is responsible for them throughout the tour. Children under 18 cannot take part without an adult.
  • There are no separate child prices: every guest in a booking pays the same price, whatever their age.
  • The food tour is about 3 hours on foot and the food is chosen for adult tastes, so think about whether it suits younger children. Strollers are possible but the route includes [kantsteina, brekkur, þröngar dyr].
  • The pub crawl is for guests aged 20 and over only.

12. Walking, accessibility and health

  • A food tour covers roughly 3 to 4 km over about 3 hours, and the Reykjavík Walking Tour roughly 2 to 3 km over about 2 hours, both at an easy pace, with some standing, a few slopes and steps, and pavements that can be uneven, wet or icy in winter. Please wear warm, waterproof clothing and shoes with good grip.
  • Some venues have steps or narrow entrances. If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, contact us before booking so we can tell you honestly what is possible.
  • You confirm that you, and everyone in your booking, are fit enough to take part. Please tell your guide at the start if you have a health condition they should know about.
  • On guided tours, follow your guide's instructions, especially when crossing streets. On the self-guided pub crawl and Local Walk you are on your own: keep to pavements and crossings and use your own judgement.

13. Your belongings

Please keep your bags, phones and other belongings with you at all times. We do not look after guests' belongings and are not responsible for items that are lost or stolen during a tour, unless the loss is caused by our negligence.

14. Photos and video

Our guides sometimes take photos or short videos during tours, for example a group photo we can send you afterwards, or for our website and social media. If you do not want to appear in photos or videos, just tell your guide at the start of the tour and we will respect that. We will not use a photo in which you are the main, clearly identifiable subject in our marketing without asking you first. You may ask us at any time to remove a photo of you from our channels. See our Privacy Policy for more.

You are welcome to take photos yourself for personal use. Please respect venue staff and other guests who do not wish to be photographed.

15. Local Walk platform

Access. Food Tour and Private Food Tour guests receive access to Local Walk as part of their booking, for [TÍMALENGD AÐGANGS, t.d. 7 daga frá virkjun]. Local Walk passes can also be bought for 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days. The period starts when you first activate the pass or log in, not on the date of purchase, and ends automatically when the period has passed. Unused passes must be activated within [12 mánuðum] of purchase.

Personal use. Your access is personal. Do not share your login, link or code with other people, sell it or copy the content. We may suspend access that is clearly being shared or misused.

Your right of withdrawal for passes. Local Walk is digital content. When you buy a pass you will be asked to agree that access may start immediately and to confirm that you understand that you then lose the 14-day right of withdrawal once the pass has been activated. If you have not activated your pass, you may withdraw within 14 days of purchase and receive a full refund. Once a pass has been activated, it is not refundable. [TIL STAÐFESTINGAR – sjá lista fyrir lögfræðing]

Content and third parties. Local Walk includes information about places, shops, restaurants and sometimes offers from independent businesses. We work to keep it accurate, but opening hours, prices, menus and offers are set by those businesses and may change or end without notice. We do not guarantee that a particular offer will be honoured, and the businesses are responsible for their own products and services.

Availability. We try to keep Local Walk available at all times, but we cannot promise it will always be uninterrupted or error-free, for example during maintenance or problems with your device, internet connection or third-party services. If the service is unavailable for a significant part of your pass period because of a fault on our side, contact us and we will extend your pass or refund you in proportion.

Walking on your own. When you use Local Walk you are walking on your own, not on a guided tour. Watch the traffic, do not look at your phone while crossing streets, dress for the weather and use your own judgement about where it is safe to go.

16. Bookings made through other companies

If you booked through an online travel agency or reseller (for example Viator, GetYourGuide or Tourdesk), your booking contract for payment, cancellation and refunds is with that company, and its cancellation policy applies. Please contact that company to cancel or change your booking. These terms still apply to everything that happens on the tour itself, including sections 5–15 and 17–19.

17. Our responsibility to you

We take care in planning and running our tours and choose our partner venues carefully. We are responsible for providing our services with reasonable care and skill.

What we are always responsible for. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for loss caused by our gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under Icelandic law. Nothing in these terms affects your mandatory rights as a consumer.

Within those limits:

  • We are not responsible for loss or injury caused by your own actions, by ignoring the guide's instructions or by circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as weather, the condition of public streets and pavements, traffic, or the acts of third parties.
  • The tasting stops are independent businesses responsible for preparing their food and for the safety of their own premises. We are not responsible for their acts or omissions unless we were negligent, for example in our choice of venue or in passing on the information you gave us.
  • For other loss caused by our ordinary negligence, our liability is limited to the price you paid for the booking concerned, and we are not responsible for loss that we could not reasonably foresee when you booked, or for loss of income, business or holiday plans.

We recommend that you have travel insurance that covers cancellation, medical costs and personal belongings.

18. Events outside our control

We are not responsible for failing to provide, or delaying, a tour because of events outside our reasonable control that we could not have avoided even with all reasonable care, such as extreme weather, natural events (for example volcanic activity), epidemics, official orders or restrictions, strikes, major power or internet failures, or the sudden closure of venues. If a tour cannot go ahead for such a reason, section 7 applies and you will be offered a full refund or a new date.

19. Complaints

If something is not right, please tell your guide straight away so we can try to fix it on the spot. You can also contact us at info@reykjaviklocals.com within a reasonable time after the tour, ideally within 14 days, with your booking reference and a description of the problem. We will reply within [14] days.

If we cannot agree, you can refer the matter to the Icelandic consumer dispute committee, Kærunefnd vöru- og þjónustukaupa (Complaints Committee on the Purchase of Goods and Services), Borgartún 29, 105 Reykjavík, email kvth@kvth.is, website island.is/v/kaerunefnd-voru-og-thjonustukaupa. You first need to have tried to settle the matter with us, and the committee charges a small filing fee. You also always have the right to take the matter to court.

20. Governing law and courts

These terms and any booking with us are governed by Icelandic law. Disputes go to Héraðsdómur Reykjavíkur (Reykjavík District Court). If you are a consumer living in another EEA country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer rules of your home country, and you may bring proceedings in the courts where you live if the law allows this.

21. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The version in force when you made your booking applies to that booking. The date at the top shows when these terms were last updated.
